Full Moon Rising

The full moon seems to perch amid the trees in a picture taken near Stuttgart, Germany, in March and released last week. The moon looks larger on the horizon than when it’s overhead because of an optical effect called the Ponzo Illusion: The human brain perceives the sky as a dome, so we subconsciously think the moon is farther away—and thus larger—when it’s on the horizon than when it’s above us.

Tarpon and Silversides, Grand Cayman

This picture was taken at Eden Rock, Grand Cayman.  For just a short time every year these silversides swarm caves and swim-throughs at Cayman’s dive sites.  The picture was taken late afternoon as the sun was going down.  I was hiding behind the silversides, low in the rocks.  As the tarpon swam through the silversides, they eventually saw me and turned away.  Just like you see in the picture.
